A Langley man allegedly threatened a woman with a handgun in the parking lot of the South Whidbey softball fields Aug. 7, according to court documents.
Prosectors charged Matthew A. Smith Jr. in Island County Superior Court Aug. 12 with felony harassment (threat to kill), unlawful display of a weapon and assault in the fourth degree.
The victim reported that Smith approached her as she was sitting in a van with the door open following a game at the park. Smith was holding a small revolver pointed at the ground; he told her she better not say anything and that he would kill her in front of everyone, according to a report by a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman reported that Smith was spinning the cylinder of the gun, which was open, and she could see that it had bullets in it, the report states.
A group of people walked by and asked the woman if she was OK. When she said she wasn’t, Smith walked away, got into his car and drove off.
A witness reported seeing Smith trying to get into the van and spitting on the victim, the deputy wrote.
A deputy conducted a traffic stop on Smith’s car and arrested him; the car was impounded pending a search warrant.
The report states that the woman had a valid no-contact order against Smith.
Smith appeared in court on Aug. 8. The judge set his bail at $50,000.
If convicted of the charges against him, Smith could face up to four years and nine months in prison under the standard sentencing range.
