A suspected car thief’s unique ensemble helped police identify her from security camera footage, according to court records.
Prosecutors charged 37-year-old Nelanna M. Sadesky in Island County Superior Court Oct. 23 with theft of a motor vehicle.
On Oct. 19, a Crosby Avenue resident reported that her 1998 Dodge Caravan was missing. She told police that she left the doors unlocked and the keys in the center console.
The deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office checked the security video and saw a stranger walking around the property. The female suspect was wearing a purple hoodie as well as a black Converse shoe on one foot and a white high-heel dress shoe on the other.
Earlier in the day, police had talked to Sadesky, who was wearing the same mismatched shoes, the deputy’s report states. The officers identified her from the video, the report alleges.
In addition, a deputy had contacted Sadesky in the same clothing that night in Freeland, the report states.
After Sadesky was arrested, she told deputies that she left the stolen vehicle at Deception Pass and hitchhiked back to town, a report states.
The deputy wrote that Sadesky’s erratic behavior had been escalating lately. On Oct. 19, police responded after she tried to light her hair on fire at the SPiN Cafe in Oak Harbor.
In other recent incidents, police were called when Sadesky was chasing kids around a trailer park, telling them they better get a gun, and she allegedly threatened to shoot people in a Freeland store.
On Oct. 21, a judge in Island County Superior Court set Sadesky’s bail at $10,000. The judge also found that Sadesky’s mental condition is such that she should be interviewed by a mental health professional for possible commitment to a treatment center.
