Oak Harbor man pleads guilty in child porn case

Prosecutors charged Sean A. Gaffney, 33, in Island County Superior Court last year.

An Oak Harbor man pleaded guilty to the possession of child pornography and could face over a year in prison, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Sean A. Gaffney, 33, in Island County Superior Court last year with viewing, possessing and sending or bringing into the state depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct. As part of his plea bargain, all but the possession charges will be dismissed, according to court documents.

Gaffney’s plea comes with an agreed recommendation in which both the prosecution and defense will recommend a 13-month sentence. Gaffney will be sentenced March 31.

In 2018, a Department of Homeland Security special agent identified Gaffney through an IP address while investigating people who were sharing child pornography. The report on the investigation states that Gaffney told investigators he knew looking at the explicit material was “immoral” and he had only done it out of “morbid curiosity.”

Digital media seized from Gaffney included approximately 5,226 images and 93 video files containing “child sexual abuse material,” the report states. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children identified 1,895 child victims in the images and 32 child victims in the video files.
