A residential fire destroyed two buildings and took the life of a family pet on North Whidbey last week.
Property owner Daniel Gibson reported the fire at 11:03 p.m. Feb. 21. The blaze at 1938 Karen Road began in a detached garage on the property, though the cause is undetermined. By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire had spread to the house, according to North Whidbey Fire and Rescue Capt. Chris Geiger.
“The wind from the north unfortunately pushed the fire into the house and involved the house before we could stop it,” Geiger said.
North Whidbey Fire and Rescue sent 10 firefighters with eight apparatus to the scene. They were joined by 13 more firefighters from Oak Harbor, the Navy, and Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue.
The garage and house were both destroyed. The loss was estimated at almost $200,000, Geiger said.
The fire captain said none of the house’s human occupants were harmed, but the family’s dog, a 15-year-old black lab named Duke who was in the garage at the time of the fire, was killed.
Dawn Wessel, a friend of the family, organized a fundraiser to help the Gibsons recover. People can donate on gofundme.com by searching “Help Gladys and Dan recover from the fire.”
