Coupeville Town Council approved an update to the fireworks code last week that will impose some new restrictions on the use of the celebratory explosives.
As discussed in a previous meeting, the change will give the mayor or her designee power to prohibit the discharge of fireworks by emergency proclamation seven days in advance of July 4 if the town is experiencing extreme weather conditions that might create a fire hazard.
The change also increases the fine for illegally discharging fireworks to $1,000, the same amount as the fine for illegally selling fireworks. Insurance requirements were also updated in the code.
Council members approved the changes unanimously during their meeting June 28. The changes will go into effect next year.
