A late North Whidbey Fire and Rescue lieutenant will be among those honored at this year’s Washington State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in North Bend.
Firefighter Tyler Rico died by suicide due to duty-related post-traumatic stress disorder on Aug. 30, 2021, according to North Whidbey Fire Chief John Clark. Rico, 32 at the time of his passing, was a volunteer firefighter and EMT and worked full-time in the administrative office for the fire district. He had been with the North Whidbey department for seven years and was a firefighter for Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue prior to that.
Rico left behind a wife and six children, who have since moved off the island, Clark said.
The memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 at the Washington State Fire Training Academy in North Bend.
Last week, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue received a ribbon in Rico’s honor that will be on display at the district office until Aug. 13.
