Deputies found no evidence that a clown broke into an elderly woman’s Central Whidbey home just after midnight on Aug. 5.

The 80-year-old resident of North Bluff Road, however, was adamant that the incident was real and neighbors were alarmed, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman’s story was eerie, to say the least. She called 911 and reported discovering a strange, tall man wearing a clown costume in her home. She said the clown didn’t say a word but had a flashlight and a sign that said he wanted her money.

The clown then disappeared, she told the emergency dispatcher.

The deputy who responded searched the house and found nobody suspicious nor any signs of anyone having made entry into the house.

Deputies don’t believe that the call was a hoax but were concerned it may have been a result of mental health issues, according to the sheriff’s office.

Nevertheless, the story made its way onto Whidbey social media circles. One commenter posited that the “loser in a clown costume” left through an unlocked glass door and unlocked gate.

“This is not a gag!!,” a commenter wrote. “We believe she was unharmed because she was compliant, calm and cooperated.”

Neighbors helped the woman to secure her home.
