The Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge is resuming meetings with a presentation on a Scandinavian art form.
Whidbey resident Martha Olsen will present a program on Rosemaling, an art form that originated in Norway.
According to lodge member Brian Petersen, Rosemaling developed when painters would decorate interior walls and beams with floral and scroll designs. Eventually, artists began using the style to decorate bowls and baskets.
Olsen will present examples of her own work, and lodge members will have an opportunity to share examples of Rosemaling from their own homes.
The program will take place at the lodge’s regular meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. The lodge is located at 63 Jacobs Rd. in Coupeville. This will be the lodge’s first regular in person meeting since before the COVID-19 pandemic, and Petersen said the organization will resume monthly meetings moving forward.
One need not be a lodge member to attend the presentation; anyone with Scandinavian heritage or an interest in Scandinavian history and culture is welcome to come.
“The Nordic Lodge meeting is open to the public, and if they have an interest in Scandinavia, then all that much better,” Petersen said.
