This year, even Santa Claus finds himself short-staffed.
Organizers of a popular December event are hoping community members might be interested in donning a costume and pretending to be a photogenic holiday-appropriate character.
For years, children have looked forward to getting their photo taken with Santa Claus at the Greenbank Farm Holiday Market. But this season, the big jolly red guy needs some assistance from volunteer “elves.”
Whether that be a snowman, reindeer, polar bear or an actual elf, volunteers are invited to join in on the holiday fun.
The Greenbank Farm Holiday Market runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 3-4 and 10-11 this year. Santa Claus will be present from 1-3 p.m. on Dec. 3-4, during which elves need to help keep everything organized while he concentrates on hearing wishes. During the other days and times when Santa isn’t there, the elves will be the ones in the pictures.
Volunteers need not be there all four market days, but at least a five-hour commitment for one day is appreciated. Soups, sandwiches, cider and snacks are available.
Tammy Cox, a Langley resident, took over organizing the holiday event last year. She recalled one of the volunteers wearing a Grinch costume, which piqued her interest.
“I figured this would be something that would be fun for people,” she said. This could include drama troupes, high school kids or anyone who enjoys getting in a festive mood.
Volunteers must email Cox at whidbeyartswap@yahoo.com by Thanksgiving in order to sign up.
In addition, groups of carolers are invited to sing for tips and promote themselves during the event.
“I would love to get Greenbank Farm back on the map because I love living here,” Cox said.
During the market, at least 40 different vendors from Whidbey Island will be selling their wares, from goat milk soap to license plate art to fudge.
