After an impressive season, a handful of South Whidbey High School wrestlers have fought their way to the state tournament.

Sophomore Kaylie Baker, senior Ravi Neumeyer and juniors Cole Thorsen and Dylan Walker are all bound for the upcoming tournament Feb. 17-18 in Tacoma, the WIAA Mat Classic XXXIV.

At the regionals tournament on Feb. 11, Baker placed third in her weight class at 145 pounds. With a record of 25-4, Baker is undeniably a competitor.

“She’s had a really great season,” Head Coach John Sommer said. “She placed fifth at the Everett Classic Girls Tournament and placed third at the Issaquah Justice For All Tournament.”

He added that Baker is the first high school girl in South Whidbey history to make it to the state championships.

“That is not something we see everyday at South Whidbey,” he said.

Neumeyer and Thorsen are two-time state wrestling tournament participants, while it will be Walker’s first year at the Mat Classic. Neumeyer placed second at 113 pounds, Thorsen placed second at 145 pounds and Walker placed first at 152 pounds.

“All three of them have worked really, really hard this year, and their hard work is paying off,” Sommer said.

At the beginning of the season, the team had 17 boys and four girls. This year, the Falcons placed second in the conference and fourth at the district championships.

Sommer took over the role of head coach this season.

“It’s been a really fun year because we had a lot of support form the community at our home duels this year,” he said.
