Maurice Arthur Aasland was reunited with the love of his life Janice on Saturday morning May 20th at the age of 96 in his residence in Everett, WA.
Maurice (or “Maury or Oz” to his friends) was born in International Falls, MN, on April 27, 1927, the second of four children of the late Russell and Myrtle (Dahl) Aasland. His early life was spent working on the family farm where he learned responsibility and developed his work ethic.
He married his wife Janice on May 29, 1960, and were married for 57 years before her passing in 2017. He is survived by his four children Joyce Aasland of Seattle, WA, Mark Aasland and wife Judy of Happy
Valley, OR, Arthur Aasland and wife Sharon of Lakeville, MN and Karen Aasland of Everett, WA, his brother William as well as 3 grandsons – Brandon, Daniel, and Zachary and 3 granddaughters – Sarah,
Breanna, and Carolyn as well as many nieces, nephews and many lifetime friends. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Janice, sister Georgene, brother Glenn and granddaughter Megan.
Maurice worked hard all his life. He served in the US Navy from 1945-1971 as a Seabee and Fleet Reserve until 1980, served during the Koren War, Vietnam War and was part of Operation Deep Freeze. Retiring in 1970. Upon retirement he worked at the Gallery Golf Course as the golf course superintendent where he enjoyed playing and being involved in designing improvements, Island County Road department, and was a member of the Seabee Veterans Association and the Golf Course Superintendent Association. He was an instrumental member in establishing the Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge Hall. He enjoyed woodworking, creating items for both his family and Toys for Tots. When his kids were young, he volunteered his time to the Oak Harbor Little League as a coach/groundskeeper along with helping at boy scout summer camp.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on July 8th at 12:00 at the Whidbey Island Nordic Lodge Hall, Coupeville, WA. With interment at Tahoma National Cemetery.
