Leonarda departed this world on December 12, 2023. Known as Lenny to her friends, Leoning to her relations, and Nana to her immediate family. She was sweetness and smiles to all she met.
Nana was a tireless provider of joy and support. She was born in the town of Palompon on the island of Leyte in the Philippines onAugust 29, 1929. She grewup on a plantation farm as the fifth daughter of Elena Campos and Gerardo Sevilla’s thirteen children. Lenny completed her teaching certificate at the Northern Leyte College and taught at a nearby village. She married Santiago Mamales after he had joined the US Navy, and emigrated with the beginnings of their young family to the US. After numerous outstations in California and Florida, they came to the island in 1966 and settled into their newly-built Penn Cove home with the last duty station at NAS Whidbey.
Aside from raising her family, Nana had a bountiful work history in the tulip fields of the Washington Bulb company, local canneries, Seabear, and many career years in electronic assembly at Lectrion, TSI, Melco, before retiring from Eldec.
Lenny and Santy were founding members of the Oak Harbor Fil-Am Association. Together with the efforts of cousins Bert & Betty Letrondo, it was Lenny’s pancit and lumpia dishes that originated the club’s acclaimed 4th of July food booth tradition. Nana loved to share her gifts of cooking, singing, crochet/needle crafts, and gardening. She enjoyed being the family photographer and loved her “school nights” at bingo, almost as much as cutting a fine rug on the dance floor with her beloved Santy.
Lenny is survived by daughters Elma (Dave) and Emily (Steve) and sons Ray (Jean/deceased), Neil and Steven (Pat), together with nine grandchildren and their spouses, and ten great grandchildren.
Rosary novena 9:30am preceding 10:00am funeral mass to be held at St Augustine Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 20. Reception to follow.
