Two longstanding Oak Harbor High School track and field records were broken in recent days.

Senior Daisy Lemley broke the school’s discus record April 20 and, on April 17, senior Jayden Boyles broke the school’s 200-meter record. The previous records stood for around 30 years.

“They live and breathe track and that’s how they’ve been since they’ve been in our program,” track head coach Jay Turner said.

Lemley broke the discus record, which was previously set by Pam Lewis in 1990, with a throw of 132.6 feet. She was competing at the Eason Invitational April 20 at Snohomish, which is a meet where nearly 100 schools competed.

“I felt like I had nothing to lose,” Lemley said. “I felt good that day.”

In addition to setting the school record, her throw was also a personal record and she placed first in discus at Eason. She said she broke her personal record by 13 feet.

She started track in her sophomore year and started focusing on the sport in her junior year.

“Throwing is calming for me. I don’t feel pressure when I throw,” Lemley said.

In addition to discus, Lemley competes in the shot put and runs the 200 meters. She is also a member of the volleyball team.

Boyles set the school record in the 200 meters during a home meet April 17 against Sedro-Woolley and Ferndale. He ran 21.61 seconds, and the previous record was 30 years old, Boyles said. The previous record holder was Levar McClary.

“It was great weather. I got off the blocks and as soon as I came around the curve, I knew I was good,” Boyles said of the race.

He said the school record has been a goal since he started track. He has been on the track team since he was a freshman.

In addition to competing in the 200 meters, he competes in the 100 meters and he is a member of the 4×100-meter relay and the 4×400-meter relay teams. He was also a member of the football team.

Both Lemley and Boyles will continue their track careers when they attend Spokane Falls Community College.

Oak Harbor traveled to Bellingham April 24 to compete against Bellingham, Mount Baker and Sehome. Boyles placed first in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Lemley placed first in shot put and second in discus, according to results posted on Athletic.net.

Oak Harbor’s last regular season meet takes place May 1 when they host Blaine and Lakewood.

Subdistricts take place May 8 and May 10 at Ferndale and the District 1 Championships take place May 15 and May 17 at Shoreline stadium.

“We just go one step at a time,” Turner said. “Every time the competition gets better.”
