It’s an exciting week for Whidbey pickleball players.

Picklers can weigh in on the design of proposed public courts and watch pros play during two different events within a span of a few days.

Feedback is welcome at an upcoming community meeting beginning at 6 p.m. this Wednesday, June 12, during which an architect will share initial design concepts for the six outdoor courts that South Whidbey Parks and Recreation is planning to build in 2025. The meeting is located in the lower gym of the South Whidbey Community Center in Langley.

Parks and Rec Executive Director Brian Tomisser said the meeting is an opportunity for the pickleball community to chime in, which gives a better idea of what players want for the courts, which will be in the South Whidbey Sports Complex on Langley Road.

A few of the planned enhancements include a shelter with tables, a hitting wall and at least one para-pickleball court that is ADA-friendly.

Catch famous Whidbey siblings Lindsey and Riley Newman in action on Sunday, June 16 at the Whidbey Pickle Barn in Freeland. Both professional pickleball players, the Newmans will demonstrate their top skills during an exhibition at 5:00-7:30 p.m.

Abi Tschetter, who owns the indoor pickleball court complex with her husband, Paul, said the siblings will break down points, explain shot selection and even challenge some local players of the nation’s fastest-growing sport.

The registration cost is $45 for members and $50 for non-members of the Whidbey Pickle Barn. During the last hour, people can participate in all levels of open play. There will also be prizes and games.
