Doris Ronhaar Nyhof

On May 13, 2024 God took Doris home after 97 1/2 years of a life well lived. She had been a resident of Life Care in Sedro Woolley, WA the past few years.

Doris was born December 9, 1926 to John and Elizabeth Abrahamse Ronhaar of Oak Harbor and soon fit right in with her rambunctious siblings, of which she was the last survivor.

After graduating from OHHS, on February 1, 1945 Doris Mae Ronhaar married LTJG Henderikus “Dick” Nyhof, USNR, of Coupeville, WA at Oak Harbor’s First Reformed Church. Driving away from the church as newlyweds, they began the first of many moves during their decades long married life.

Doris and Dick raised 3 sons, Richard, Daniel and Robert. The greatest tragedy of their lives was the loss of their eldest, TSGT Richard E. Nyhof, USAF, on June 18, 1972. Rich was an aerial gunner in an AC-130 Spectre, which was shot down over the South Vietnam-Laos border. There were no survivors of the 15 member crew.

But life went on as they continued to raise Dan and Bob in Fremont, CA as well as keep in touch with many of Rich’s friends and squadron mates through the years with phone calls, visits and attending many of the reunions across the country.

After a move to Paradise, CA Dick became ill and eventually passed away from pancreatic cancer. From there Doris moved to Georgia to live with son Bob for a few years, before deciding to move back to Oak Harbor, wanting to be nearer to her remaining siblings for however many years they had left.

Doris was preceded in death by her son Rich, husband Dick, sister Margaret Jedele and brothers Jim, Carl, Dan and Bob Ronhaar. She is survived by sons Dan and Bob, Dan’s 3 daughters, sister-in-law Bea Ronhaar of Lynden and many nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Auntie Doris!!!
