George W. Minor Jr.: September 23, 1949 – May 31, 2024

George William Minor, Jr., “June” went to meet his Heavenly Father May 31, 2024, surrounded by his beloved wife and family at their home in Oak Harbor, WA.

His much loved Texas family members will always remember him as “June”.

He was born September 23, 1949 in San Antonio, Texas to Gwen E. Penny-Minor, and George W. Minor, Sr.

George met Marie Greenwood on a blind date set up by his best friend while he was stationed in El Toro, Santa Ana, California in 1995 during his military career. Marie remembers that first date fondly with admiration for a gentle soft spoken man. Pizza on the beach for their 1st date. She said he was so nervous his hands were all clammy when he held her hand for the 1st time! They married September 4, 1999 in Oak Harbor, WA among family and friends.

He enjoyed being together with his loving wife. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed crabbing, hunting, loved football, loved baseball, family man, traveling, hiking. He called Washington, “Gods Country”.George would always make Marie laugh and smile with his sense of humor and family stories which she would listen to admirably. He was funny, sensitive, kind, honorable, smart, creative, and a hard worker. He was a Godly man believing in the Lord and all his goodness throughout his life.

George was a Texas native whose life and career took him around the world in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968-1995, (27 Years Active and 3 years inactive for a total of 30 years military service). Following his Father’s footsteps. ONCE A MARINE ALWAYS A MARINE!

Master Gunnery Sergeant, George W. Minor, Jr., MYGYSGT, E-9, “Top” as his friends called him was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross-of Gallantry Medal, Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Meritorious Commendation Medal, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon.

Southwest Asia Service Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (6), Combat Air Wing (with 3 stares), Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal (9 awards), Navy Unit Commendation Medal (2 awards), Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal (2 awards), NATO Medal, National Defense Service Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2 awards), Meritorious Mast (2 awards), Certificate of Commendation, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 awards), Iraq Campaign Medal.

He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High in San Antonio, TX in 1968. He then went onto the University of Texas with a football Scholarship. George started his US Marine Corps career in August, 1968 due to the draft of the Vietnam war. He graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Bachelor in Arts in 1999 as the years went by; City University with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Accounting in 2005 which launched his 2nd and 3rd career as Clinical Manager and Behavior Health Manager for Sea Mar Clinic for 9 years in Bellingham, WA., and a Auditor with Department of Labor and Industry for 5 years in Mt. Vernon, WA. Retiring at age 65 to enjoy his quality of life with his wife, family, and hobbies he loved.

He is preceded by his Father, George William Minor Sr.; Mother, Gwen Eunice Penny-Minor; Sisters, Linda Diane Daughtrey; Gwenda Lynn Daughtrey; Cynthia Ann West; Helen Louise Postell; Darlene Francis Grace; and Brother, Timothy Minor. He is survived by his loving wife Marie V. Minor; Son, Chuck W. Minor; Daughter, Angela M. Minor; Step-daughters, Sarah N. Brock and Shannon M. Arendsen; Sisters, Mary A. Stephens; Jeanie R. Minor; Kathleen L. Hadlock; Donna E. Langdon; Brothers Joseph D. Minor; David A. Minor; and Kenneth A. Minor. Nine Grandchildren, Kayla, Sandy, Julia, Dylan, Chase, Sheldyn, Anthony, Rose, Wyatt and Three Great Grandchildren, Kylie, Troy and Damon.

Memorial services will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX, September 20, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. were he will rest near his Father and Mother. All are invited to attend. The Veterans Legacy Memorial page has been set up for George. Celebrations of Life and Eulogy to follow ceremony.
