The entrepreneurial gift: How one anniversary sparked two local businesses

Practically Magic Cleaning and CS Painting are now serving the local community

Typical anniversary gifts for most couples might include flowers, a card, or maybe a dinner out together. But for Whidbey local Shannon Jansen, last year’s anniversary gift from her husband Codey was more than special: it came in the form of a business license and the support to start her own cleaning business.

“Starting Practically Magic Cleaning was something I had wanted to do for a while, and Codey took the initiative, getting everything set up for me. It might seem unconventional as far as anniversary gifts go, but it meant a lot to me and gave me the push I needed,” Shannon says.

A year and a half later, Shannon is thriving — balancing life as a wife, mother, and business owner. Her passion for cleaning is now channeled into helping local businesses keep their storefronts spotless and assisting military families as they prepare for moves.

“While I offer cleaning services for a variety of situations, I have a soft spot for our military service members both retired and active. My grandfather was a Marine, my father was in the Navy, and my brother was in the Army, so I have a personal connection. I understand military families often need last-minute move-out cleans and I do my best to accommodate them,” she explains.

Shannon currently offers her cleaning services for both residential and commercial clients on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis, move out cleans, deep cleans, construction cleans and Airbnb cleaning.

“I want to give a huge thank you to all of my clients for supporting me throughout my journey as a business owner. I truly can’t express how much I appreciate their continued loyalty and support,” adds Shannon.

Recently, Shannon had the opportunity to support Codey’s entrepreneurial spirit when he started his own business, C&S Painting — “C” for Codey and “S” for Shannon.

“We had talked about Codey starting his business for a while. He picked the name himself, which I thought was sweet. I helped design the logo, which features a gorilla—his favorite animal,” Shannon says.

C&S Painting offers more than just painting. The business also handles window and roof cleaning, pressure washing, millwork, drywall repair, deck and fence refinishing, cabinetry and more.

“I’ve always had an eye for detail, which is why I love painting. People underestimate how much a professional paint job can boost a home’s appearance and resale value. I take pride in delivering quality work that’s done right the first time,” Codey says.

As lifelong Whidbey Island residents, Shannon and Codey are enjoying this new chapter in their lives, getting to know their fellow Island neighbors in a new way as small business owners. Shannon adds that both businesses are currently accepting new clients in and around the Whidbey area.
