A 38-year-old Mount Vernon man who led police on a long, strange trip through Island and Skagit counties last month is facing charges.

Prosecutors charged Brian R. Brenton in Island County Superior Court Oct. 1 with attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle and driving while license revoked.

After midnight on Sept. 18, a caller reported a possible DUI driver on Highway 20 on North Whidbey. The caller said that a 1990s Chevrolet Suburban was traveling south at erratic speeds and drifting across the lane.

A deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office got behind the car near the intersection with Ault Field Road. In a report on the incident, the deputy noted that the car would accelerate and decelerate for no apparent reason, and the driver would suddenly jerk the wheel when the car drifted off the road.

Near the intersection with Northeast Seventh Avenue in Oak Harbor, the car crossed the centerline and suddenly braked. The deputy turned on lights and sirens to pull the car over, but the car continued on. It turned into the El Cazador parking lot, turned on Whidbey Avenue and then headed north of the highway. The car sped up to 60 mph in the 40 mph zone and later accelerated to 80 mph near the roundabout at Northgate Drive, the deputy wrote.

The deputy terminated the pursuit after the car crossed the bridge into Skagit County. An officer with the Swinomish Police Department tried unsuccessfully to stop the car on Highway 20 near the casino, the report states.

The Swinomish police identified the driver as Brenton and noted that he had a female passenger. The Mount Vernon police were notified of his address.
