Oak Harbor is taking applications for position 5 of the city council.
Shane Hoffmire, who held the position since January 2022, announced his resignation on Nov. 19 as he prepares for his move to Peoria, Illinois. The position runs through Dec. of next year.
Per the Revised Code of Washington, when a position vacates, the council appoints someone new. The city is currently advertising for the open position with an application deadline of Dec. 5.
The application packet can be found on the city website. On Dec. 10, the council will review qualified applications and create a shortlist for interviews. Dec. 17, the council will interview candidates, discuss in executive session, then return to open session and make the appointment.
The schedule ensures a new person will be in the seat by the start of 2025 and the new budget cycle, said City Administrator Sabrina Combs.
Candidates should be prepared to speak on why they want to serve on the council; what experiences, talents or skills they will bring; any regional issues in which they have expertise or interest in; and if they plan on running during the November 2025 election. The council may ask additional questions.
The application may be submitted in hard copy or electronic form to Julie Nester, city clerk, at jnester@oakharbor.org or City Hall on Barrington Dr.
