Wilinda “Winnie” Sotomayor Marin passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on December 19, 2024. She was born on August 1, 1952, in the town of Magdalena, Laguna, Philippines, to Severino and Erlinda Marin. From an early age,Winnie’s radiant smile and generous spirit touched the lives of everyone around her.
Winnie pursued her education at Santa Isabel College in the Philippines, where she graduated with pride. She began her career as a secretary for PLDT, earning a reputation for her dedication, professionalism, and kind demeanor.
In 1974, she married Napoleon Galang and started a family. Winnie made lifelong friendship through the various military bases around the world as a Navy wife. In 1991, following the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, Winnie courageously moved to Whidbey Island with her daughters, seeking a new chapter and brighter opportunities for her family.
For over 20 years, Winnie worked tirelessly at the Navy Exchange Grill and Hangar, where she became a beloved figure. Known for her nurturing spirit, she built lasting connections with sailors at NAS Whidbey, whom she fondly referred to as her “adopted kids.”Winnie made it her mission to ensure they were well-fed, cared for, and comforted, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
Winnie had a special passion for cooking. She was especially known for her delicious lumpia, which became the centerpiece of her cherished Relay for Life fundraisers. Beyond her culinary skills, Winnie united people through her food, creating a sense of love and community with every dish she prepared.
In 2015, Winnie retired and stepped into the role she cherished most, being a full-time grandmother. Her grandchildren, Jaedan, Daisy, Abby, Jacoby, Ben, James, and Thomas were the light of her life. Winnie found immense joy in witnessing their milestones and sharing her wisdom and warmth. In her final years, she embraced life with zest and lived fully, treasuring every moment with her family and friends.
Winnie was immensely proud of her daughters: Hazel (married to Dale Delacruz), Crystalyn (married to Chris Johnson), Jaemee (married to Dane Witmer), and Charlene (married to HD Terhanian). She often spoke of their accomplishments and the deep love they shared as a family.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Severino and Erlinda Marin and her brothers, Diego Marin and Francisco Marin.
A viewing will be held for Winnie at Wallin Stucky Funeral Home on January 3rd at 11 am, followed by a celebration of life at1pm. Graveside services will be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery immediately following. She will be remembered for her boundless love, vibrant energy, and the countless lives she touched.
