The Oak Harbor High School boys cross country team claimed third place at the Three Course Challenge in Seaside, Ore., Saturday, Sept. 17.
Each school splits its team into three groups, one each for the hard (5,000 meters), moderate (5,000 meters) and easy (4,500 meters) courses. The courses include mud pits and other obstacles.
The Wildcats competed in Division I, which features the biggest schools. The boys took third out of 21 teams in the division, while the Oak Harbor girls placed seventh out of 22.
Kentridge was the Division I boys champion with 132 points; Monta Vista (Cupertino, Calif.) had 168 and Oak Harbor 203.
Camas, with 84 points, won the girls Division I title. Oak Harbor scored 304.
In all, 88 boys teams and 89 girls teams and 2,205 high school athletes took part.
Oak Harbor’s Ben Gasper (20:09) won the Division I hard course race, beating Inglemoor’s Liam Elias by one second. Gasper was fifth overall out of 429 runners.
Michael Lym (15:36) was third in the division’s easy race (sixth overall out of 441). Over the moderate course, Tyler Grehan (19:30) took eighth (12th overall out of 429).
For the Oak Harbor girls, sophomore Alex Smith (23.57) placed seventh in the moderate race (14th overall out of 302). Her freshman sister Megan took 14th (20:56) on the easy course (26th overall out of 336); and Laura Rodeheffer (25:44) was 15th on the hard course (31st overall out of 268).
Oak Harbor goes to Lynnwood’s Martha Lake Airport Park to meet Lynnwood, Cascade and Lake Stevens at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.
