Panthers hand Oak Harbor swimmers first loss

The Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team split a pair of tightly contested battles at the Snohomish Aquatic Center Thursday, Sept. 29.

Snohomish (5-1) edged the Wildcats 93-87, handing Oak Harbor its first defeat of the season. The Wildcats nipped Glacier Peak (3-3) 93-92. It was the second one-point loss of the fall for the Grizzlies.

Olivia Tungate won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.2, bettering the state qualifying time she posted earlier this season. She also earned a state time while finishing second in the 100 freestyle in 55.26.

Jillian Pape captured the 50 free in 25.28, .03 seconds off the state qualifying time. She also had a near miss in the 100 butterfly, falling .68 seconds short with a 1:01.38, good for second in the meet, and in the 200 free relay with Tungate, Taliah Black and Molly Vagt, where their winning time of 1:46.24 was .68 seconds off the state mark.

Black clocked a personal best 1:12.63 while winning the 100 breaststroke, and Vagt won the 500 free (5:30.04).

Tungate, Black, Vagt and Pape earned Oak Harbor’s other first in the meet, taking the 200 medley relay (1:57.86).

Frances Empinado (100 back, 1:15.7) and Naomi Garcia (100 free, 1:03.4) earned district qualifying times while placing fifth and seventh respectively.

“The girls swam awesome,” coach Jenny Butler said. “There were a lot of personal best times. I couldn’t be prouder of the team. They all gave 100 percent and supported each other.”

Oak Harbor (7-1) will hold its final home meet of the season when Everett (2-6) visits at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10.
