Ferndale Marine killed in Afghanistan

A Marine from Ferndale was one of six killed Jan. 19 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Capt. Daniel B. Bartle, 27, a helicopter pilot, was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He was one of six Marines killed in the crash.

There will be a public motorcade in Bartle’s honor Saturday beginning at approximately 1 p.m., following a route from the Bellingham Airport to Westford Funeral Home, 1301 Broadway, Bellingham.

A public memorial for will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Ferndale High School, 5830 Golden Eagle Drive, Ferndale. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Jan. 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Church of the Assumption, 2116 Cornwall Ave., Bellingham. A reception will follow at the church.

Bartle graduated from Ferndale High School in 2002 as the class valedictorian and attended the U.S. Naval Academy.

According to NATO officials, there were no signs of enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash, and a mechanical failure is being investigated.
