Gallery grand opening tonight
The newest fine arts gallery on Whidbey Island is open for business.
The grand opening of the Garry Oak Gallery is Saturday, Oct. 25, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The public is invited to come to the gallery at 830 SE Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor’s Old Town Mall to view artists’ work and enjoy some light refreshments and harpist Kathy Fleck.
The cooperative fine arts gallery will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The variety of 2D and 3D art pieces, created by Whidbey artists assures there is something for everyone. Included in the gallery are the works of:

Navy receives energy honors
Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, working closely with Puget Sound Energy on energy conservation measures, was recognized Oct. 21 with the prestigious platinum-level Energy and Water Management Award by the Secretary of the Navy at a ceremony at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.
“PSE is proud to have facilitated our Navy colleagues’ efforts that garnered this much-deserved award for their energy savings in 2007,” said Cal Shirley, vice president of Energy Efficiency Services for PSE, in a news release. “NAS Whidbey’s energy team continues to set an example for us all by being aggressive with its awareness campaign, innovative with its energy conservation measures, and consistent in reducing energy consumption.”
According to Navy administrators, a platinum-level award indicates an outstanding energy program and exceptional year for energy project execution. The award comes with $5,000 and authorization to fly the Secretary of the Navy’s Energy Flag for one year.
