Coupeville High School wrapped up the tennis season by earning fourth and fifth in the district singles tournament at the Sprinker Center in Tacoma Thursday, Oct. 29.
After placing first and second at the Olympic League tournament, seniors Sebastian Davis and Connor McCormick nabbed fourth and fifth at district.
Coupeville sophomores Joey Lippo and William Nelson also competed at district but didn’t place after dropping both of their matches.
Davis started district with a 6-1, 6-1 win, then fell in the semifinals by the same score.
McCormick lost 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round but bounced back in the consolation bracket to win 6-3, 6-3.
That set up a match between the Coupeville teammates, and Davis prevailed 6-3, 6-3.
Davis lost 6-2, 6-4 in the match for third and fourth.
Lippo and Nelson fell 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-4.
“Sebastian played some excellent tennis, but his two losses were to players who eventually finished second and third,” coach Ken Stange said.
“Connor lost to two of the best players in the tourney, one of them was Sebastian,” Stange said. “He has been such a steady player for all four years of his career at CHS. I was impressed by his ability to step in at singles this season after playing his first three years at doubles.”
In regard to his young doubles team, Stange said, “The experience was good. They’ve now gotten a taste of district level tennis. Now, they know what needs to be done if they want to advance.”
