The Mountlake Terrace High School baseball team put together a good start with a better finish on the way to an 11-1, six-inning win over visiting Oak Harbor Wednesday, April 4.

The Hawks (3-2, 3-4) scored four runs in the first inning, then after being blanked for three frames, tacked on five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to hand Oak Harbor its fourth loss in five league games.

The two teams tangle again today at 4 p.m. (Thursday, April 5) in Oak Harbor in a makeup game for Tuesday’s rainout.

Wednesday’s game had an odd beginning. In the bottom of the first, Terrace’s first two batters each hit triples, and both times the hitters where safe at third on disputed calls.

That was a bad omen, according to Oak Harbor coach Tyson VanDam, and the game featured several other strange calls.

Two walks, a fielder’s choice, a sacrifice fly and a single followed the triples to produce the four-spot.

From there, Wildcat starter Andrew Snavely settled down and retired the next 10 hitters.

In the fifth, Snavely walked the bases loaded and was replaced by Zach Zimmer. A double and two-base error started the five-run onslaught.

A two-run home run in the sixth put the Hawks up 11-1 and ended the game because of the 10-run rule.

Oak Harbor’s only run came in the fifth on consecutive two-out singles by Mitch Mertins, Grant Schroeder and Sam Glavick.

Jack Richter (two singles) and Nate Stanford (pinch double) also had hits for the Wildcats.

Mountlake Terrace had only one more hit than Oak Harbor, but was aided by five walks and several errors.
