After voting in potential plays for the 2009 season, Whidbey Playhouse is calling for directors.
Under consideration are dramas “Other People’s Money,” “Cinderella” and “My Three Angels,” a story about three prisoners in a French Guiana colony. Voted into second place for the drama category were “The Heiress” (the gullible daughter of an ill-tempered doctor), “I Hate Hamlet” and “Zombies from the Beyond,” a 1950s style space invader spoof musical.
The theater board is also looking at “Cash on Delivery” (a British farce), “A Christmas Carol,” “Lettice and Lovage,” “A Nice Family Gathering” (Thanksgiving comedy) “Sweet and Hot,” “Swinging on a Star” and “Cover of Life” a southern comedy about three young military wives during World War II.
Wishful directors can declare their interest by emailing office@whidbeyplayhouse.com, or by phone at 679-2237, and including a time slot preference. The board may ask for additional information before making a final decision.
“It’s helpful if they have prior experience directing,” Janis Powell, business manager, said.
Powell adds that theater staff can help out-of-town directors familiarize themselves with the Whidbey Playhouse. New directors are asked to work as an assistant director on two shows (or once as assistant director and once as stage manager) prior to directing.
The 13 plays chosen during “Play Day” will be reviewed and voted on by the board of directors. The final season announcement is coming this March.
