The North Whidbey Sunrise Rotary Club Challenge Series will feature children racing down the Barrington hill from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The starting line will be located near Island Thrift and the finish line near the post office.

This is the 23rd year of the Challenge Series, which pairs Boy and Girl Scouts ages nine to 13 with special-needs children in an event geared more toward the thrill of participation and teamwork than competition.

Cheerleaders, firefighters, parents and others are typically on hand to cheer on participants.

“It’s quite an event,” said Don Howat, the Sunrise Rotary’s committee chairman. “Just to see the smiles on their faces. That’s usually what brings out the adults.”

The Fallen Friends Car Show is in its third year. It is open to all makes of cars, which will be on display on Barrington.

The car show will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is $20 and may be done the morning of the event.

Proceeds for the car show will go toward a scholarship fund for a Skagit Valley College student enrolled in the school’s automotive program.

Several of the event’s organizers teamed up to spruce up a 1997 Honda Civic that will be raffled off for $5 a ticket.

Both events are free to the public.

Sponsorship money raised from the Challenge Series goes to scholarships toward Skagit Valley College and other causes in which the Rotary contributes.
