The Oak Harbor police chief received a written reprimand for losing his gun at a supermarket bathroom earlier this month.

Oak Harbor Mayor Bob Severns sent out a press release today detailing the incident.

Police Chief Edgar Green reported at 9 p.m. Friday, March 4 that he had misplaced his personally owned Glock .40-caliber handgun. He informed the mayor, city administrators and officers on duty that he needed to file a police report over the loss and have the information placed in appropriate state and federal databases, according to the press release.

Green reported that he remembered having the gun while using the bathroom at the Saar’s Marketplace at about 7:27 p.m. and may have accidentally left it in a towel container.

He noticed the gun was missing at 8 p.m. when he arrived home. He immediately contacted the store manager to conduct a search but was unable to locate the weapon.

According to the press release, police department policy requires that an officer “make every effort to secure a weapon and not lose physical control of it.”

The Whidbey News-Times left phone messages for Severns and Green about the incident last week but didn’t hear back until the press release was sent late Tuesday afternoon, after press deadline.

The News-Times also submitted a public records request last week for documents related to the incident but hasn’t received anything yet.
