The Coupeville High School football team is in the middle of its eight-day spring camp and is gearing up for team camp at Central Washington University later this month.

The Wolves are practicing at 4 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through June 17. They will head to Ellensburg for the four-day CWU camp June 18.

Head coach Jay Silver sees about 30 players each day; the number fluctuates, he said, because some miss periodically because of other commitments.

Silver said, “Our goal for camp is to get a little better each day and to begin to see how players respond when they are placed in game-like situations.”

Last spring the Wolves held only a mini-camp because Silver was hired late in the school year.

“This year,” Silver said, “we are actually practicing and able to install our programs, work on player development and have kids challenge each other for spots they want to play next year.

“It also helps get the incoming freshmen used to how high-school football is run. Of course, one of the biggest aspects is to have fun.”

He added that camp helps get the players into a football “mind-set” and allows the coaches to teach fundamentals and changes in the schemes.

“Hopefully (we are) a little farther ahead when fall comes around,” Silver said.

The second-year coach likes what he has seen so far: “I like that they are flying around and having fun. They have a year of what my expectations are and how we are running our program, so the practices seem to be going a little smoother already. It is just nice to be out coaching football again and to see the kids having fun playing it.”
