A 21-year-old Oak Harbor man struck another man with brass knuckles and kicked him when he was down during a fight outside an Oak Harbor bar Nov. 1, 2008, court documents indicate.

Prosecutor charged Deante Lawson in Island County Superior Court Jan. 12 with second-degree assault with aggravating factors. He could face from three to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range if convicted.

In court Jan. 26, the judge authorized a harassment no-contact order barring Lawson from contacting the alleged victim.

A fight involving multiple people broke out in front of the Lava Lounge on Pioneer Way in the early morning hours. When police arrived, two men were lying unconscious in the middle of the street, Detective Mike Bailey wrote in his report on the incident.

A witness reported that Lawson, who was 20 at the time, had struck one of the men with brass knuckles, Bailey wrote. Other witnesses reported that Lawson also kicked the man while he was on the ground, the report says.

The 21-year-old victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. He went through a three-hour surgery to repair his facial injuries.

In an interview with the detective, Lawson admitted that he got into a fight that night because he thought one of the other men uttered a racial slur. But Lawson denied using any kind of weapon and said he was just defending himself, the detective wrote.
