Several graduates of Oak Harbor and Coupeville high schools have continued their athletic careers past the prep stage. Here’s a look at some who competed this spring.
Oak Harbor’s Bridgette Walker just concluded a record-setting year for the Pepperdine University track team.
Walker, a four-time letter winner for the Wave, set the school record in the 400 meters at 57.63 March 19.
She also ran on three record-setting relay teams this spring. Walker and teammates set the 4×200 record of 1:44.57 and the 4×400 record of 4:09.34 March 12, then the 4×100 record of 48.22 April 9.
Her sophomore year she helped set school relay marks in the 800 sprint medley (1:52.11) and 1,600 sprint medley (4:36.07).
As Walker finished up her track career at Pepperdine, Oak Harbor’s Shantae Young started hers at Washington State University.
Young, a freshman, had the Cougars’ top triple jump mark this spring, leaping 39-10.5 April 23.
She also produced WSU’s third-best long jump mark (18-03.25) and fourth-best 100-meter time (12.61) this year.
Coupeville’s Kyle King, a junior on Eastern Washington University’s track team, decided to redshirt this year and did not compete in any meets for the Eagles this season.
He did compete on his own in the 35th running of the Bloomsday Run in Spokane May 1 and placed 23rd (37:26) out of over 50,000 runners in the 12K race that attracts many of the world’s top distance runners.
He recorded the second fastest time by a runner from Washington state and finished fifth in his age group (19-22).
University of Washington freshman Matt Bolte, an Oak Harbor High School graduate, rowed for the Huskies this spring. He held the sixth seat on the freshman “B” boat for the Windermere Cup.
Oak Harbor’s Heidi McNeill is continuing her professional basketball career in Australia. She is playing for the Lakeside Lightning of Perth, which currently has a 4-9 record at the season’s midpoint.
McNeill is 11th in Australian State League scoring with 16.2 points per game, 11th in shooting percentage at 44.3 percent and 13th in rebounding with 8.7 per game.
