The first in a series of public open house information sessions hosted by the U.S. Navy will be held Tuesday in Oak Harbor.

The Navy is inviting the public to comment on the Northwest Training and Testing (NWTT) on  Environmental Impact Statement/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement.

The Navy proposes to adjust training and testing activities to support current and planned requirements and to accommodate changing mission requirements associated with force structure changes.

The open house information sessions provide a forum for the public to obtain information about the proposed action and to provide comments on factors to be considered in the EIS/OEIS.

Certain Navy exercises have come under some criticism from environmentalists, particularly its use of underwater sonar thought to injure porpoises and whales under certain circumstance.

The information session will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the Oak Harbor School District Administrative Services Center.

No formal presentation or oral comment session is scheduled, but Navy representatives will be available to discuss the project and the proposed action.
