A 19-year-old woman accused of hiding stolen loot under her baby and punching a Wal-Mart security employee is wanted on a $10,000 bench warrant, court records show.

Prosecutors charged Ashley Wright, identified as a Kansas resident in court documents, in Island County Superior Court Jan. 22 with second-degree theft and assault in the third degree.

On Feb. 4, Judge Vickie Churchill issued a $5,000 bench warrant for Wright’s arrest after she didn’t appear at a court hearing. After she was arrested, the judge released her on her personal recognizance at a May 1 hearing.

But Wright again failed to appear at another hearing May 5. This time Churchill issued a $10,000 warrant for her arrest.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Jennifer Porter responded to the shoplifting complaint at Wal-Mart Oct. 18. Security employees reported that they had Wright and a 29-year-old man in custody after they were observed stealing DVD movies and baby clothing, the officer wrote.

According to the report, a security employee stopped Wright as she left the store carrying a month-old baby in a carrier. She threw a bag at him and ran, but the employee grabbed her. Wright allegedly punched the man, the report states, and screamed that she didn’t want to go to jail. Wright dropped the baby carrier on the ground twice during the struggle, Porter wrote.

The security employee held Wright against a car in the parking lot until she calmed down.

Officers searched the baby carrier and found a DVD holder containing numerous stolen DVDs, including “Knocked Up” and “Bad Boys,” under the infant’s headrest, the report indicates.
