One for the thumb. The Coupeville girls tennis team is shooting for its fifth consecutive league championship ring this spring.

The Wolves have a good shot at reaching that goal with the return of last year’s co-MVP winners, Emily Burchfield and Lexi Blanchette, and two-time district doubles champion Amanda d’Almeida.

Burchfield and Blanchette finished 2-3 in district singles in 2011, but this year coach Ken Stange is going to pair Blanchette with d’Almeida in doubles. D’Almeida’s two-year partner transferred.

Letter winners Grayson Akins, Holly Craggs and Rachael Parker also return and figure to provide “some big wins in doubles,” according to Stange.

Adding depth are sophomores Allie Hanigan and Makenna Martyn. Hanigan played last year in Kelso, and Martyn is “bringing her volleyball skills to the (tennis) court,” Stange said.

Stange outlined three goals for this year’s team: defeat Friday Harbor to win the league title; take a doubles team, and possibly a singles player, to state; and ensure each individual finds fun and improvement in her game.

Stange said, “We lost quite a few players to graduation and/or moving, but we have some new players that will hopefully give us depth this season. We are pretty sure at No. 1 singles and doubles but untested in other areas.”

He added that this is “nothing new” and that the “players will rise to the occasion.”

Coupeville begins the season on the road Friday, March 16, at 3:30 p.m. with its first of three matches with Friday Harbor to determine the champion of their two-team league.
