It was emotionally charged and rugged at times, but the Oak Harbor High School soccer team slipped by Everett 2-1 in overtime at Wildcat Memorial Stadium Friday, March 28.

Gavin Stewart put an end to scrum with a goal off an assist from Alex Krantz three minutes into the first overtime.

“I think we went into the game a little over confident and got caught off guard,” coach Brian Thompson said. Everett came to Oak Harbor with a 0-3-1 record but didn’t bow to the Wildcats, who were 2-0-1.

After a scoreless first half, the Seagulls scored first in the second period. To make matters worse for Oak Harbor, a Wildcat was ejected for arguing with an official, forcing Oak Harbor to play from behind a man down.

Everett held off Oak Harbor until the final six minutes when Caley Powers tied the match.

Soon after, “the emotions were very high and tempers got the best of both teams,” Thompson said, and a scuffle broke out, leading to the ejection of two more players, one from each team.

Now, going into overtime, Oak Harbor was down two players and Everett one.

Even with the disadvantage, the Wildcats, behind Stewart’s goal, pulled out the win.

Oak Harbor (2-0, 3-0-1) travels to Stanwood (1-0, 2-1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 31.
