Coupeville’s Nathan Lamb collected his third consecutive district tennis championship by winning the singles title Saturday, Oct. 15, in Friday Harbor.

The victory gives Lamb, a junior, a berth in the quad-district tournament Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Seattle where he will shoot for a spot in the state tournament.

Saturday’s win was Lamb’s first crown in singles. He teamed with his brother Jordan to win the doubles title in 2009 and linked up with Sam Weaver to win it again last fall.

Aaron Curtin and Taku Yamauchi placed second in doubles in this year’s district meet while teammates Jason Knoll and Larry Hurlburt placed fourth.

Ben Wehrman finished third in singles.

By placing second, Curtin and Yamauchi get another shot at qualifying for quad-district. The play-in match is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22. in Coupeville.

After shutting out Friday Harbor’s Shaughn Anderson 6-0, 6-0 in he semifinals, Lamb came back to edge Sandro Meyer 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 for the title.

Coach Ken Stange said, “Nathan played well in the first set, but was unable to pick up the crucial points. He settled down in the second set and cruised to an easy win. He used consistency, placement, and misdirection to keep Sandro guessing.”

With the score tied at four games each in the third set, Lamb was able to break serve then hold serve to secure first place.

Meyer defeated Wehrman 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round, then Wehrman blanked Anderson 6-0, 6-0 for third.

Stange said the third place finish by Wehrman “capped a solid year” for the junior.

Curtin and Yamauchi opened the tournament with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win over Friday Harbor’s Sean Hills and Ryan Cole.

Stange said, “This was a fun match to watch. Both teams were erratic but put on quite a display of power.”

In the other first round doubles match, the Wolverines’ Parker Satin and Hayden Place stopped Knoll and Hurlburt 6-1, 6-1.

In the finals, Satin and Parker cruised by Curtin and Yamauchi 6-0, 6-0.

Knoll and Hurlburt dropped the match for third and fourth 2-6, 0-6.

Stange said, “I’ll miss Larry…he’s given CHS four good years on the tennis team, and he’s always been able to keep things light and fun on the court. Jason, however, has two more years left. I hope he comes back with a burning desire to light up the opposition next year.”
