A late push by Lakewood lifted the Cougars to a 46-37 win over the visiting Coupeville High School girls basketball team Wednesday, Feb. 2.

The two clubs were tight throughout the first three quarters. Coupeville led after one, 11-10, the two teams were tied at 22 at halftime, and then the Cougars (7-6, 8-11) were up 30-29 after three.

The Wolves broke down during the stretch, according to coach Jackie Bykonen. Coupeville, which has had trouble closing out games this year, was “unable to finish on the offensive and defensive ends,” Bykonen said.

She added, “Close shots are missed and then we play really good defense, and then don’t block out. So there are a lot of second opportunities for the other team to score. Pretty much just beat ourselves and made mistakes, which they capitalized on.”

Cassidi Rosenkrance and Bessie Walstad paced Coupeville with seven points, one more than Katie Smith, Kendra O’Keefe and Taya Boonstra. Jai’Lysa Hoskins added three and Courtney Arnold two.

The Wolves (2-11, 3-16) have a tough finish to the regular season, going to first-place and seventh-ranked Archbishop Thomas Murphy (12-1, 15-3) Friday, Feb, 4, at 7 p.m.

Coupeville enters the post season with a loser-out game against Nooksack Valley (8-10) Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School. The winner advances to the tri-district tournament.
