Here’s a rundown on some of the sports-related community events taking place in the area.
McClung Run
The fifth annual Megan McClung 5K Run/Walk takes place Saturday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
The race is open to all runners, not just military personnel, and costs $35. Participants receive a technical running shirt and commemorative poker chip. Prizes include the use of a Porsche for a weekend and two free entries into the Marine Corps Marathon.
Proceeds go to the Semper Fi Fund.

Major McClung died in 2006 and was the first female officer killed in Iraq. She enjoyed running and set up the first marathon held in Iraq.
Youth Firearm Class
Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Association, as part of its ongoing firearm safety program, is holding a youth firearm safety class today, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the CWSA clubhouse on Safari Street, 2.5 miles south of Coupeville.
This class does not substitute for the hunter safety class required by the state of Washington. CWSA will be holding a hunter education class Aug. 24 to 27.
The youth firearm class is free and open for those between the ages of 8 and 16 and will cover firearm safety, proper handling of firearms, sighting, marksmanship, how to read a target and firearm laws. The class also includes firing range instruction, and firearms and ammunition will be provided.
Instruction is provided by retired Island County Sheriff’s Department firearms instructors.
Each youth must be accompanied by an adult.
Participants should bring a lunch including a beverage.

Chasing Bacon Run
The Chasing Bacon 5K run/walk, sponsored by the Oak Harbor Charity Runners, is set for Sunday, Aug. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at Windjammer Park.
The race precedes the annual Fidalgo Block Party, a free pig roast.
The entry fee for the run is $15 and all proceeds go to the Oak Harbor High School cross country team travel fund.
Last month’s race raised $150 for the Boys and Girls Club of Oak Harbor.
Participants who pre-register by Aug. 12 receive a free T-shirt. Participants can also register from 9 to 10:15 a.m. on race day.

Fall Baseball
Registration for North Whidbey Little League fall ball is wrapping up as the league will form teams this weekend and the season starts Monday, Aug. 15.

Fall Recreational Soccer
North Whidbey Soccer Club is currently holding registration for fall recreational soccer.
The season runs from early September through Oct. 29 and is open to age groups U6 to U14.
All U6 to U8 games will be played at Fort Nugent Park on Saturdays. U10 to U14 teams will play in the Whidbey Island Soccer League (WISL) with games on Saturdays up and down the island.
The fee is $95.
The NWSC Soccer Academy offers summer training for boys and girls in age groups U8 to U14. Practices are held on Wednesdays with a specialized soccer coach. Registration is $65 for the 10-week session, prorated for late registrants.

Alumni Football Game
Alumni Football USA is providing graduates an opportunity to relive the glory of Friday Night Lights.
The organization is helping area cities, including Oak Harbor, put together a football teams of graduates for a single full-contact game this fall.
Alumni Football USA provides all the equipment, insurance, officials, security and emergency personnel for the game.
Once players commit, they organize their own practices in preparation for the game, according to spokeswoman Hollie Fortkamp.

Triathlon
The North Whidbey Park and Recreation District and NAS Whidbey NWR are co-spronsoring the Seaplane Sprint Triathlon Sunday, Aug. 21.
The race will take place on the Seaplane Base portion of NAS Whidbey Island and no special passes for access will be required for participants, volunteers and spectators.
The race will consist of a 500-yard swim in Crescent Harbor, a 12-mile bike ride and a 2.7 mile run.
Participants will be divided into 11 age groups, and relay groups of men, women and mixed will be divided by combined age.
Awards will be given to the top three in each division 8.

Hunter Safety Class
The Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Association is offering a hunter education class Aug. 24 to 27.
The class is free and all necessary materials, including firearms and targets, will be furnished by CWSA. Pre-registration is required.
The class is for all hunters, particularly for anyone born after Jan. 1, 1972. By Washington state law, these individuals must show proof that they have completed a hunter education class when they purchase their hunting licenses.
The class covers gun safety, understanding state game laws, habitat of game animals and more.
The first three sessions, Wednesday to Friday, Aug. 24 to 26, will run from 6 to 9 p.m. The final session (firing range and test) is Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon.
An individual must attend all four sessions in order to receive a completion certification.
All sessions will be at the CWSA clubhouse and range located 2.5 miles south of Coupeville on Safari Street, which is just south of Highway 20 and Morris Road and just north of the Outlying Field. There is a sign on the highway.

Lawn Bowling Championship
The U.S. National Lawn Bowling Championships will be hosted by the Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club of Seattle Aug. 24 to 28.
The club is located at 4103 Beacon Ave. S. in Seattle.
Opening ceremonies are Aug. 24 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., then matches will take place Aug, 25 to 28 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The tournament is free for spectators.

Crab Cook-off
The DockStock Festival held by the Port of South Whidbey at the harbor in Langley will include a crab cook-off competition Saturday, Aug. 27, open to anyone who prepares a crab dish from locally caught crab.
There will be four categories: Crab Soup, Crab Cakes, Crab Dip/Spread and Crab Specialty Dish.
Four local celebrity guest judges will select the best of each category for top prizes. $100 will be awarded to “People’s Choice Award” based on the votes of the public’s favorite dish.
Registration takes place the day of the event between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The entry fee is $5 per dish, limit one entry per category by an individual or team.
Judging will begin at 4 p.m. and will look at presentation, originality and taste. Awards will be announced on the band stage at the end of the pier at 4:45 pm.

Coupeville Boosters Club
The Coupeville Boosters Club will hold its biggest fundraiser of the year when it hosts its golf tournament Sunday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Gallery Golf Course.
Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m.
Among the prizes is a $25,000 hole-in-one cash award.

North Whidbey Aquatic Club
The North Whidbey Aquatic Club is a competitive swimming program of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District. It includes swimmers of all abilities and ages from 6 through college.
Tryouts occur Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the city pool from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. New swimmers should be able to swim a length of the pool in freestyle and backstroke.
The first two weeks are free.
