Champions of Diversity program at Skagit Valley College honored 99 high school students for their contributions to diversity in their schools and communities.
Educational institutions, local businesses and community organizations in November awarded $182,094 in scholarships to 57 seniors who have shown exemplary service in leadership, community service and academic and educational activities.
Award-winning students from Oak Harbor High School were Joyce Abides, Christina Alexander, Giordan Dolan-Umipig, Chelsey McKenzie, Jessica Taylor and Shelby Woodward.
McKenzie also received a $10,000 scholarship to the University of Washington, Bothell campus.
In addition, the North Cascades Institute provided nominees with an early application opportunity to participate in either a free North Cascades Wild or Cascades Climate Challenge program. Students will have the opportunity to spend next summer canoeing, hiking and completing service projects in North Cascades National Park and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
