The Coupeville fastpitch team suffered another tough loss, falling to Lakewood 8-7 on the Wolves’ diamond Wednesday, April 7.

Coupeville is 0-4 in Cascade Conference play, dropping three of those games by one run.

The Wolves next take the field Wednesday, April 14, when first-place Archbishop Thomas Murphy (5-0, 6-1) comes to Coupeville for a 4 p.m. game.

In the loss to Lakewood, the Wolves rallied back from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the third and two in the fifth to go up 6-4. Roxy Piechowski’s two-run single highlighted the third-inning rally.

The Cougars regained the lead with three in the sixth when they strung together three of their four hits. The Wolves knotted the score 6-6 with a single tally in the bottom half of the inning.

Lakewood (2-4, 4-4) rang up the game-winner in the last inning. After Coupeville relief pitcher Maria Rockwell struck out the first two batters, an error, walk and error resulted in the Cougar run.

Piechowski started off the bottom of the seventh by reaching on an error but was left stranded. She finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.

Bessie Walstad had a single, run and RBI; Katie Smith singled and scored two runs; and Megan Smith singled and scored.

As with the other close losses, the Lakewood defeat continued a pattern of Coupeville out hitting its opponent but committing more errors. The Wolves had five hits to the Cougars’ four but recorded five errors to just one for Lakewood. The CHS pitchers also walked eight. Only four of Lakewood’s eight runs were earned.

In spite of his team’s troubles, Coupeville coach Denny Zylstra said, “There are a lot of positives. Our hitting has improved immensely.”
