A memorial service will be held Thursday for Melissa Christine Ellis, the 31-year-old Oak Harbor woman who had been missing since November.

The service begins at 2 p.m. and will be held at Living Word Church, 490 NW Crosby Ave. A potluck will be held afterwards and the public is invited to attend, according to Oak Harbor Police Detective Sgt. Teri Gardner.

Ellis’s body was found Wednesday, Dec. 28, in the water off Port Townsend by workers at a nearby construction site. Her identity was confirmed by the Jefferson County coroner, who also determined the cause of death as salt water drowning.

Authorities say there is no indication of foul play.

Ellis disappeared Friday, Nov 25, the day after Thanksgiving. She was last seen leaving her Oak Harbor home between 10 and 11 a.m. and reportedly told family members that she was going to Coupeville or the beach.

The mother of three commonly rode on Island Transit buses and at times suffered from memory loss. Her cell phone was found on a sidewalk outside her home and she didn’t leave with her identification, Gardner said.

Police have been unable to determine whether Ellis got on a bus or went to Central Whidbey and authorities are still trying to ascertain if she got on the ferry at Keystone.

Ellis leaves behind three children, all of whom are under the age of 10. A memorial fund has been set up at Whidbey Island Bank.
