A man who sneaked into his father’s North Whidbey home without permission and choked him was sent to prison Monday.

Under a plea bargain, Jeremy L. Thompson, 25, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court to residential burglary and assault in the second degree. Both counts included special allegations of domestic violence.

Judge Alan Hancock agreed with the sentencing recommendation presented as part of the plea bargain and sent Thompson to prison for two years and five months, followed by 18 months of community custody.

In addition, Hancock ordered Thompson to get a chemical dependency evaluation and to follow through with any treatment that is recommended.

Chief Criminal Prosecutor Eric Ohme said Thompson’s father felt torn about the sentence but ultimately decided it was best for his son to face the consequences of his actions and to get help with his methamphetamine addiction.

“He loves his son,” Ohme said, “but he feels his son really needs to get off methamphetamine and get on track in life.”

Steve McKay, Thompson’s attorney, said his client plans to participate in substance-abuse treatment in prison.

The incident occurred on Aug. 15. Thompson’s father kicked him out of his house after he was “going nuts,” according to the police report.

The father went outside a short time later and noticed his son’s truck parked at a neighbor’s house, then he began to hear banging noises inside his home.

He went back inside and his son “sucker punched” him in the mouth, the report states.

Thompson punched him again and the father fell to the floor; Thompson put him in “an extremely tight” chokehold and the immediately had trouble breathing, the deputy wrote in his report.

Thompson threatened that he was going to kill the older man twice while they struggled. The man was able to escape after they both fell sideways.

The victim suffered a swollen lip and the deputy observed large red marks on his neck. He nearly passed out while walking to a car and was transported to the hospital.

The deputy originally arrested Thompson on suspicion of attempted murder.
