The Island County Fair in Langley hits on all eight cylinders this weekend with a plethora of events planned for residents.

4-H Club members and others with animal entries from all over Whidbey Island prettified their beasts Wednesday in preparation for judging and the official opening of the fair on Thursday. While not hot, the weather has been comfortable for fairgoers and mild temperatures are predicted to continue this weekend.

Oak Harbor Navy families and other military folks might be enticed to attend today, Aug. 21, which is Military Appreciation Day. Active duty personnel get in for $1 and dependents get in for half price.

Saturday’s activities start at 9 a.m. with the Alpaca quiz bowl, followed at 9:30 by a performance of saxophonist Danny Ward at the Midway Stage. The 4-H goat milking contest is squeezed in just before attention is turned to downtown Langley for the Fair Parade. It starts at 10 a.m. and meanders back to the fairgrounds in time for the Livestock Auction at 11 a.m.

Saturday and Sunday are both filled with animal events, carnival rides and greasy fair food. The annual log show is at 4 p.m. Saturday and the final Midway Stage event is The Magic of Sterling Dietz at 5:15 p.m. Sunday.

Fair exhibits will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, which is its last day. Regular admission for adults is $7 daily. There are discounts for military with ID, seniors over 65, children 6 to 15, and kids under 5 are free.
