A defensive meltdown by Oak Harbor helped host Shorecrest High School score 11 runs in one inning en route to a 16-6 softball win in five innings Wednesday, April 15.
Oak Harbor took a 3-2 lead into the fourth, then Shorecrest (2-7, 2-9) took advantage of seven errors and three walks to produce the double-digit inning.
“I guess spring break didn’t help us so much,” coach Todd Showalter said. “We gave up a few runs and things just snowballed.
“We’ll hit the practice field tomorrow and get over it.”
The defensive struggles wasted one of the Wildcats’ strongest offensive showing of the season. Oak Harbor finished with nine hits, getting three from Laura Anderson, who also drove in three runs and scored another.
Tricia Sarns added two hits, an RBI and three runs; Alexa Findley was 2-for-3 with a run; Sam Payne had a hit, run and RBI; and Kelly Findley singled.
One bright spot on defensive, Showalter said, was the play of left fielder Payne who made two nice catches that robbed the Scots of base hits.
Oak Harbor (1-6, 1-8) hosts Mountlake Terrace (4-2, 5-3) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 17.
