Tuesday evening’s WesCo North soccer game between Cascade and Oak Harbor at Wildcat Memorial Stadium was a physically-demanding contest for both teams.
The officiating crew appeared to be content for play to continue for most of the game, not calling many fouls despite a lot of pushing, shoving and holding going on.
Oak Harbor coach Steve Barker has a number of tough ladies on the team that refuse to back down from anybody and gave back as much as they received.
In the end, goals by Talyn Miller and Sam Munger in the first half, and Munger’s second goal at 43-minutes in the second half, gave the Bruins a 3-0 victory.
Several of the Wildcats were injured in the game that on occasion made fans wonder whether the team shouldn’t have been supplied with helmets and shoulder pads before taking the field.
Already short-handed in goal with sophomore keeper Jordan Boucher out with a knee injury, Baker had senior forward Hope Thompson starting in the net.
Tompson was replaced in the first half by junior Janelle Green, who was called up from the junior varsity.
Late in the second half Green suffered a head injury on a play and once again, Thompson went back in the net.
Oak Harbor’s defense played hard against the Bruins, but the offense had a difficult time putting consistent pressure on the Cascade goal.
After the game Barker had no comment on what transpired on the field, but was not upset about the effort the Wildcats put forth in the contest against a very physical Cascade team.
