When the Coupeville High School girls basketball team heads to Wenatchee to play Cashmere in the regional round of the state tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, it will be a new experience for the current Wolves. Not so for the Bulldogs.

Cashmere is used to the bright lights of state, placing third the past two years while compiling a 49-4 record.

The Wolves will be going to state for the first time since 2006.

This year’s Cashmere team hasn’t posted a sparkling record like the 2014 (26-1) and 2015 (23-3) versions, but don’t be fooled by the Bulldogs’ 2016 mark of 15-7.

Among the Bulldogs’ losses were setbacks to Okanogan, 23-0 and ranked first in 2B; East Valley of Spokane, 19-3 and ranked first in 2A; Mabton, 20-3 and ranked fourth in 2B; Granger, 17-3 and ranked fifth in 1A; and Zillah, 16-4 and ranked sixth in 1A.

Cashmere dropped its season opener by one point to 2A Ephrata and another one-pointer to league foe Chelan.

The Bulldogs avenged the conference loss to Chelan by beating the Goats three times by double figures, including a 20-point win in the district tournament title game.

Cashmere won the four-team Caribou League with an 8-1 record.

Coupeville went 9-0 in Olympic League play for the second straight year and holds a 16-5 season record.

The five losses came by a combined 21 points; the largest was an eight-point setback to eighth-ranked Bellevue Christian.

Coupeville hopes to return to the glory of the early 2000s when the Wolves made five trips to the state tournament between 2000 and 2006, placing fourth in 2002 and eighth in 2003 and 2005.
