When playing an experienced high school football team on its own turf you can’t afford to make mistakes.
Oak Harbor learned that lesson the hard way at Everett Memorial Stadium Friday night losing 22-0 to the Seagulls in a non-league game.
Things went wrong even before the Wildcats took the field.
Kickoff was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but got pushed back to 8 p.m. because Cascade and Mariner were playing the early game on the turf, and it was a downhill slide from there.
“We killed ourselves tonight,” coach Jay Turner said. “I think we made more mistakes tonight than we’ve made in the full season.”
On the Seagulls’ opening possession from their own 36-yard line, they ran four plays and scored on a 46-yard touchdown run by George Posadas off right tackle with 4:07 left in the first quarter.
Ben Barhanovich’s extra point kick was good and as things turned out, the Seagulls had all the points they would need.
After a 7-yard scoring pass from Everett quarterback Chase Herrick to Jake Frauenholtz at the 6:39 mark of the second period, the game turned into a comedy of errors.
Oak Harbor mounted a 61-yard drive, but fumbled the ball away at the Everett 4-yard line.
The ’Cats got a second chance when Curtis Ducken recovered a fumble after the Seagulls ran three plays and moved the ball out to the 16-yard line. However, on Oak Harbor’s first play from scrimmage, the ball came loose once again and Everett was able to regain possession.
Holding a 14-0 halftime advantage, the Seagulls put the game out of reach when Herrick connected with Frauenholtz on a 53-yard bomb to pay dirt up the sideline in front the Everett bench.
“They did a pump and go and we bit on the pump,” Turner said. “That’s a good senior receiver for them against our sophomore corner and sometimes things like that happen.”
The snap was bad on the extra-point try and Michael Murray ran the ball into the end zone for the 2-point conversion.
Oak Harbor had good numbers rushing the ball gaining 147 yards on 34 attempts. Brad Farnum lead the way gaining 70 yards on 15 carries and teammate Donovan Hunt had seven carries for 54 yards.
Passing was a major problem in the Wildcats’ game plan and quarterback J Jordan was able to throw for a mere 16 yards while being sacked three times for 31 yards.
“We have to get points in the red zone and we have to stop giving up long plays,” Turner said. “We have to learn from our mistakes, bounce back and get after it.”
Oak Harbor returns home to Wildcat Memorial Stadium Friday night to face the Mount Vernon Bulldogs who were 34-31 winners over Sehome.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
