Former North Whidbey Aquatic Club and Oak Harbor High School swimmers Evan Wilson and John Hu, both now competing for the Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, N.J.), raced to All-American status with fifth (3:56.98) and eighth (3:59.70) place finishes in the men’s 400-yard individual medley at the NCAA Division III National Swimming and Diving Championships contested March 17-20 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Wilson, a junior, was competing in his third national championship meet and made it two straight years as an All-American (conferred on top-eight finishers) in the 400 IM, an event in which he placed seventh in 2009. His 2010 time was a personal best and qualified him for the National Championships this August in Irvine, Calif. Wilson also placed ninth in the 1,650 free (15:48.83) and 19th in the 500 free (4:35.68)
Hu, a freshman, scored (top 16 finishers) in two other events in addition to his All-America finish in the 400 IM, placing ninth and winning the consolation final in the 200 fly (1:50.73) and coming in 13th in the 200 IM (1:52.99).
Wilson and Hu, together with teammate Alex Benham, who placed 11th in the 1,650, accounted for all of Stevens’ points leading them to a 17th place team finish among the 60 teams in the meet.
