Oak Harbor boys basketball fans are used to hearing the line “Washington led the Wildcats in scoring.”

And Washington, once again, led the way in Oak Harbor’s 51-41 win over visiting Lynnwood Tuesday, Dec. 13.

This time, however, it was hot-shooting sophomore Drew Washington who gained a game high 24 points by drilling eight three pointers in 12 attempts.

Senior brother Mike Washington Jr., a four-year starter and all-league player who is the one most often found at the top of the stat sheet, added 11 points.

While Drew Washington’s bombs attracted the spotlight, Oak Harbor received an equally impressive performance from Kevawn Brooks who scored nine points, gathered 10 rebounds, rejected six shots and dished two assists.

Lynnwood led only once when it scored the first hoop of the game. Moments later Drew Washington sank his first three and the Wildcats took over. The Royals, however, battled back several times to stay in the game.

Oak Harbor jumped to a 10-4 lead, then it was 10-8 before the ‘Cats led 17-11 at the quarter.

The Royals tied it at 20 in the second period before Oak Harbor spurted to a 28-20 halftime lead.

Lynnwood (1-3, 1-6) cut the margin to three, 31-28, in the third quarter, then Oak Harbor went on a 15-0 run to go on top 46-28 with 6:48 left. Drew Washington hit three threes and Mike Washington Jr. added a three-point play to fuel the surge.

The Royals bounced back to make it 47-37 with 2:55 remaining but couldn’t get closer.

Coach Mike Washington Sr. said, “I’m glad we got the first win, but I didn’t like the way we finished.”

He added, “I though we played defense really well; we forced them into two-or-three shot clock violations. We also ran the transition break pretty well.”

The Wildcats held the Royals to 32.7 percent shooting (17-for-52) while hitting 40.4 percent (19-for-47).

Oak Harbor won the rebound battle, 38-28, with Cameron Faulkner and Matt Burgoyne getting eight each to go along with Brooks’ 10.

The Wildcats had 17 turnovers to Lynnwood’s nine, and the Royals outscored Oak Harbor 15-3 off the mistakes.

Faulkner scored four points, Jamacio Webster two and Burgoyne one for Oak Harbor.

Oak Harbor (1-1, 1-2) goes to Shorewood (1-1, 2-1) Thursday, Dec. 15, and then hosts Everett (0-2, 0-4) Friday at 7:15 p.m.
